We are back from Fiji.

What an amazing place! I will post more about what we did in a couple days when I'm caught up on stuff here but here is a photo for now.

This was one view from our treehouse. Yup, a treehouse on the beach. How cool is that!

Matangi Island is a magical place with wonderful people, cool animals, gorgeous views. No doubt about it... we are going back.

My Wedding Dress - Part II

I went fabric shopping today. I found a gorgeous off-white floral burnout fabric, it would be so perfect but they don’t have enough for my dress. Then I found another fabric I liked but it wouldn’t work well with the seams on the skirt. I also need to find a buckle (preferably vintage) for the back of my dress. So here is a breakdown of my options.

1 - Go to the garment district in LA and hopefully find something there.
2 – Re-drape the skirt in a way that will work with the fabric but may end up making my butt look big.

Last week when I was at a thrift store I found a vintage late 30s early 40s wedding dress that I had planned on selling on ebay. It was absolutely filthy but after spending a weekend in the bathtub with some Biz it is clean & pretty. It is long & has a petite train so if I were to wear it I would want to cut it shorter & put new buttons on it. I think the length is a bit much for city hall. I am a little torn about cutting off the dress because it is vintage & very pretty, just not my style. So doing so would be #3

3 – Wear altered vintage dress
4 – Stop stressing about the dress & just go buy one

If I don’t end up wearing the one I already designed, I will still make it out of a more casual fabric because I think it will be a really cute summer dress. : )

My Wedding Dress (I know better than this)

I’m gittin’ hitched in less than 2 weeks. (BTW – be on the internet on March 17 at 4:00 pm – more info to follow) : )

As I have mentioned before, my ability to get an order for anything correct is very limited. Something always gets screwed up no matter how clear I am about what I need. I momentarily forgot this and ordered a custom repro vintage Alfred Shaheen dress from a woman in Bali. I sent her my measurements & told her which fabric I wanted. She had a vintage “pearl white” fabric that was “perfect for a wedding dress” on her website. Well as it turns out, her idea of pearl white is actually silver. And I don’t mean white with silver highlights, I mean metallic gray... The dress fits great and would be lovely as a New Years dress but not a wedding dress, not at all. So with time ticking away & nothing interesting at the stores I am making my own dress. Here is my muslin mock up. It’s pretty simple on the front, I’m working out the kinks for some decorative work on the back. I think it should turn out well. I’m thinking either ivory silk satin or some sort of non-hippy eyelet.

It feels really good to make clothing again. I went to college for it but just sort of stopped for no real reason. If I have time after I finish this one I’m going to make some simple summer dresses to wear on the islands. So far so good. Wish me luck!
